About SLO Village

SLO Village was founded in 2016 by a group of active older adults in SLO County who wanted their retirement years to be engaging and purposeful. Our Village is part of the grassroots “Village Movement” that began in Beacon Hill, MA in 2002. There are now over 350 Villages across the nation.

Where is SLO Village

SLO Village is not a retirement facility or living community. SLO Village is a community created by members and volunteers living in their homes throughout the Central Coast. SLO Village serves residents in San Luis Obispo County with most of our members residing in the San Luis Obispo City limits. Contact our office to see if your city resides within our geographic area.

Our Mission

The mission of the SLO Village is to transform how we age in our communities. As a community-based membership organization, SLO Village connects older adults by offering support and opportunities for meaningful, engaging experiences while continuing to live in our own homes. This is accomplished by providing easy access to a screened network of service volunteers, networking with professional providers, and offering social activities.

The Village Movement

The Village Movement is a grassroots concept that is sweeping the nation. It is a new retirement model designed to encourage and enable at-home independence and community connection for older adults. For many, it has meant being able to live out their lives in their own homes and neighborhoods, rather than relocating to assisted living, nursing homes, or moving closer to children.

The Village to Village Network

SLO Village joined the Village to Village Network in 2015. There are over 300 Villages in this network. Through this network, Villages share their knowledge, experience, and expertise with other Villages to help them grow and thrive...More

Membership

Members pay an annual fee to attend all social events and/or have access to volunteer-supported services. These services include transportation to medical appointments, computer help, or something as simple as changing a light bulb are available. All paid membership forms have access to our vetted professionals' service list that is approved by SLO Village when needs are beyond the help of a volunteer's abilities. Many members in SLO Village are active volunteers – utilizing the “neighbors helping neighbors” concept. More

Volunteers

Villages tend to be “volunteer first,” which means that they prefer to use volunteers to deliver services. Villages provide “one-call does it all” support and problem-solving for their members. Volunteers provide transportation, assistance with shopping and household chores, gardening, light home repairs, and maintenance for members.
