Welcome

SLO Village is an innovative community-minded movement that is working towards creating a better experience of aging.

We are a membership-based organization focused on empowering older adults (50 years of age and older) to continue living successfully in their own homes as they age throughout SLO County. Our members are encouraged to connect through social activities and, when needed additional support from vetted volunteers.

Not every older adult has the friends or family to provide the crucial support they need. Through generous donations and the dedication of caring volunteers, SLO Village has been able to effectively serve older adults in San Luis Obispo County. Your support has helped keep membership costs low and allowed us to expand our services and programs. Click here to read our End-of-Year campaign letter.

Tami's Thoughts - The Wonder of Wandering
Throughout my life, getting out daily for a good long walk has been my church.  A chance to breathe hard and to exercise my body, brain, heart and soul. Lately, however, I've been wound up tighter than a roly-poly.  My walks have become a chore, a drudgery, and a reminder that I don't 'have the time' to be doing this, so just put your head down and 'get it done'!

Thankfully, this monkey-brain way of thinking was recently and wonderfully thrown of course by my good friend and neighbor, Glen Carlson.

I often stop for a chat with Glen while out walking and the other day, in his thoughtful, truthful, gentle way, he reminded me of the wonder of wandering.  The emails will get read, the ‘to do’ list will get done, the phone calls will get made, the constant spew of news will remain constant . meanwhile, the window of opportunity to wander beckons.  Be aware, be awake, tune in, breathe, wonder.

Connection with Corene
I wear numerous hats in my professional and personal life. As many of you know, one of those hats is as Operations Manager for SLO Village; another is being a patient advocate as a young adult with a rare autoimmune disease.

In January 2022, my world took an unexpected turn with this diagnosis. I was nervous about sharing my health challenges, which I feared might significantly impact my ability to serve in my daily role.  However, upon sharing my diagnosis with both the SLO Village Board and our Members/Volunteers, I quickly learned that I was safe, supported, and valued. Leaning in with a transparent and vulnerable heart, and a few adjustments like wearing a mask at our gatherings, I continue to trust this beautiful community-focused organization. While this is a life diagnosis, I am comforted and buoyed by the support and belonging that SLO Village offers.

It Takes A Village
By 2030, California will be home to 10.8 million older adults, accounting for one-quarter of the state’s population. 34% of our state’s older adults will be moderate- and middle-income, without Medicaid benefits. California is responding to these demographic changes by implementing a Master Plan for Aging. Village Resources
SLO Village is an 'Open' nonprofit.  We work with established
nonprofits, senior centers, and government agencies in our community. We make it our business to know what is offered by other organizations and avoid duplication of effort. SLO Village is aware of service “gaps” and we understand how to navigate community services. Check out our community partners below or click here to find out more about available Resources for older adults in SLO County.
